Since I'm about to go to Halifax for a visit I thought I'd see if I could absorb some of the local flavor. Not sure how well that worked. The story was not what I expected. It's kind of dark. After a few chapters I suddenly noticed a "Cinderella" story line here; nice helpful person so wrongfully overlooked, slighted, ignored. The protagonist was portrayed as one of those loner types who did a heroic deed and expected accolades to fall at her feet only to find reality didn't quite mesh with her day dreams of being a hero. The aftermath leads to major decisions and changes. The story eventually drags on...and on so I skipped nearly the last third of the book and read the last few chapters just to get it over with. I'll not spoil it for you but like Cinderella, they all live haply ever after...sort of. 2.5 starsProduct details

I just received Halifax and finished it within 24 hours. I loved the raw honesty with which Ms Mauch describes Ellie's roller coaster of emotions after murdering an amusement park gunman and during her interactions with her cruel mother and maladjusted boyfriend. The settings, the plot and the characters were all totally engaging and kept me turning its pages hours past my bedtime.
Started off slow but quickly caught on. Kept reading until I finished in one day.wpuld recommend to friends who enjoy mystery and intrigue.
With Joan Mauch as your travel guide, you'll see a different side of Nova Scotia the dark side. Following heroine Ellie Hurley's sightseeing itinerary,I raced through this fast paced read.The author pauses here and there, to describe some of the locations worth visiting and set the mood for Ellie's adventure. Otherwise, the plot speeds along like a race car heading down a narrow, winding road on the side of a steep mountain.
Emotionally abused by her family, stuck in a job where no one respects her, Ellie's transformation begins when she shoots a mass murderer and becomes a hero. As a result of this traumatic event, she struggles with a growing temptation to use violence as an effective way to solve problems. Because she's afraid she'll strangle her annoying mother or self absorbed sister, Ellie eventually packs up her car and leaves town, heading North. Like Cinderella, she finds romance and adventure. Unlike Cinderella, she also finds sex and violence. Load this ebook into your and you'll be staying up past midnight just to find out what happens next.
There were many ways the author could have gone with this writing. I enjoined reading it very much thank you
Interesting book about a beautiful area. It was totally unexpected to end the way it did, sure didn't see it coming.
Couldn't get through it. Just personally not an interesting story to me but other might like it. I just found it boring.
It was kind of strange, a little dark, (characters definitely had stability issues, as I'm sure they were meant to) and then it ended much quicker than it felt it should have. Not my kind of book but that doesnt mean someone else won't like these Dean Koontzy kind of characters.
